Junior Prospect ("Junior Prospect," "we," "us") is a private platform that helps elementary, middle, and high school students plan their academic, college- readiness, and student-athlete journeys, with connected experiences for parents and verified organizations. Protecting the privacy of children and teens is central to how the product is built — not an afterthought.
This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices and rights you have. It is written to align with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA, 16 CFR Part 312) and with student- and teen- privacy expectations more broadly.
Privacy at a glance
- Private by default. Student profiles are private when created. Nothing is public unless the student (or, for younger children, a parent) explicitly chooses to share it.
- Children under 13 are parent-managed. A child under 13 cannot create their own account. A parent or guardian creates and controls the account and must provide verifiable parental consent before personal information is collected beyond what is needed to obtain that consent.
- No open adult-to-minor messaging. Conversations involving a minor are not delivered until a connected, approved parent consents.
- No exact addresses. We store and display only city and state — never a street address.
- Sensitive data is minimized and gated. GPA is optional and hidden by default; test scores, peer benchmarks, and any disability/support information are kept in restricted, owner-and-approved-parent-only storage and are never shown publicly.
Information we collect
Account information — name, username, email, role (student, parent, or organization), and (for students) date of birth used to determine age-appropriate protections.
Student profile information (only what is provided) — school name, city and state, grade and graduation year, academic interests and intended majors, courses and activities, optional GPA, and student-athlete details. Documents you upload (such as report cards or transcripts) and any extracted academic data.
Sensitive information (optional, restricted) — test scores, computed readiness scores and peer benchmarks, and any disability or support information a family chooses to record for support-matching. These are stored in restricted locations, access is logged, and they are never displayed publicly.
Usage and device information — basic, privacy-preserving information needed to operate and secure the service.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use children's personal information for behavioral advertising.
How we use information
- To create and operate profiles and connected family and organization views.
- To provide planning guidance only — readiness estimates, college "match" estimates, and scholarship suggestions are planning aids based on a profile and public data; they are never predictions, promises, or guarantees.
- To enable consent-gated, safety-moderated communication.
- To keep the service safe (moderation, abuse prevention, and security).
- To comply with legal obligations.
Parental consent and choices (COPPA)
For children under 13, we obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information beyond what is reasonably necessary to obtain consent. A parent may, at any time: review the child's information, direct us to delete it, and refuse further collection or use. Consent is recorded per purpose and can be revoked. Parents manage these choices from the parent dashboard or by contacting us at [privacy@juniorprospect.com].
How information is shared and who can see it
- You control visibility. Profile visibility is private by default and you choose any wider audience (connections, verified organizations, or public).
- Connected parents see only what the connected student shares with them; a parent link must be approved on both sides.
- Verified organizations can discover students only within strict visibility limits and only when the relevant consent is on file. Organizations can never read uploaded documents and cannot freely message minors.
- Service providers. We use Google Firebase (authentication, database, storage, and serverless functions) to operate the service. Public reference data comes from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard and NCES, and (for evaluation-resource lookups) SAMHSA FindTreatment.gov and the NPPES NPI Registry. These lookups are performed without storing your personal information with those sources.
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of a child or others.
Data retention and deletion
We retain personal information only as long as needed to provide the service or as required by law, and we honor deletion requests. Account and child-data deletion is processed on a defined service-level timeline. See our Data Retention Policy for specifics.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you (or a parent on a child's behalf) may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact [privacy@juniorprospect.com]. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Security
We enforce privacy and access rules in the data model, security rules, and server-side logic — not just the interface. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect personal information against unauthorized access.
Changes to this policy
We will post any changes here and update the "Last updated" date. Material changes affecting children's information will be accompanied by appropriate notice and, where required, renewed parental consent.
